New to Tarot? Start Exactly as You Are
You do not need to memorise anything before you begin. You do not need a gift, a lineage, or the right kind of intuition. You need a deck, a question or two, and a little willingness to sit with what the cards stir up. That is all anyone has ever needed.
Tarot, as we practise it at Moon Crown, is not a machine for predicting a fixed future. It is a mirror and a conversation — seventy-eight small paintings of beginnings and endings, courage and rest, love, work, grief, and joy. A reading does not hand you your fate. It shows you the weather you are standing in, so you can choose your next step with your eyes open.
Step 1 — Meet the journey: the Major Arcana
The 22 Major Arcana are the deck's great story, from The Fool's first step to The World's completion. Begin by reading a few of them — they are the cards beginners meet first, and everything else in the deck comments on them. Browse all 22 Major Arcana meanings →
Step 2 — Your first reading
Find a quiet minute. Hold the deck and think of your question — open questions ("What do I need to understand about…?") give richer answers than yes-or-no ones. Shuffle until it feels done; there is no correct number. Then:
- One card, daily. Draw a single card in the morning or evening, read its meaning here, and notice through the day where its theme shows up. Write one line in a journal. This one habit teaches the deck faster than any amount of study.
- Three cards, when you want a story. Past · Present · Path forward — or Situation · Challenge · Advice. Read them as a sentence, not three separate verdicts.
- Write it down. Even two sentences. Recorded readings become a map, and your own meanings will start to outgrow any book — exactly as they should.
Step 3 — Read by the Moon
Every Moon Crown card carries a lunar lens: the moon phase its energy belongs to. When a card puzzles you, look at its phase — it tells you the card's tempo. A New Moon card is asking for an intention; a Last Quarter card is asking for a release. Walk the phase pathways →
Step 4 — Reversals, when you're ready
If upside-down cards feel like too much today, set them aside without guilt — many experienced readers do. When you're curious, our short guide explains reversals as the same energy turned inward, blocked, delayed, or ripening — never as doom. Read Reversed Cards, Without Fear →
