On our card

A brown woman with golden angel wings pours liquid smoothly between two golden cups, never spilling a drop. One foot rests on the land and one in the water, with irises blooming along the bank beside her.

Temperance upright — the meaning

Temperance is the art of blending. The figure pours between two cups in an unbroken stream, which often points to patience, moderation, and combining different elements until they work together smoothly. The middle path, neither all nor nothing, can suit a situation better than extremes. Timing matters too: adding things gradually, adjusting as the mixture develops, and testing rather than demanding instant results. Harmony is usually built in small pours, repeated with care over time, and cooperation helps different contributions blend when each is measured and heard.

Temperance reversed — the meaning

Reversed, Temperance often points to something out of proportion, where one area of life receives nearly everything and the rest run on leftovers. Impatience with a blending process that genuinely needs more time can appear, along with a pattern of swinging between extremes. Sometimes a combination is not mixing well yet, such as two plans, schedules, or priorities competing. Adjustment rather than judgement helps: reduce one pour, increase another, and notice the effect before changing more. Balance is an ongoing practice, never a finish line reached just once.
